Especially for those lovers and conservationists, the island is a paradise of lazy sea lions on the beach, birds skimming across the lagoons, curious wallabies and kangaroos, lofty rugged cliffs, sparkling white sands of isolated beaches and time-sculpted coastal rock formations.
- Experience the magic of Seal Bay, you can stroll with your guide through a wild sea lion colony.
- See how eucalyptus oil is made at Emu Ridge, using century-old methods.
- Go underground at Kelly Hill to discover the secrets of an active cave system.
- Venture out after dark at Kingscote or Penneshaw to discover the fascinating fairy penguins.
- Come in spring to see a splendid display of wildflowers all over the island.
Kangaroo Island more than earns its ranking as Australia’s fourth major tourism icon.
Find seals basking on quiet beaches. See koalas munching on gum trees. Watch echidnas wandering in search of insects. Look out for the kangaroos, goannas, penguins and birds at just about every turn.
Walk among huge weather sculptured granite boulders at Remarkable Rocks. Roll down the white sand dunes of Little Sahara. Dodge wildlife as you hike through bushland. Stretch out on your own piece of the island's 480 kilometres of coastline. Retire to a lighthouse keeper's cottage for the night.
Travelling to Kangaroo Island is easy. It's a 30 minute flight south of Adelaide or less than two and a half hours by car and ferry.
Here are a few things you should see on Kangaroo Island.
Flinders Chase National Park
Marvel at Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch in the Flinders Chase National Park. Stay at the 1909 Cape du Couedic lighthouse. See wildlife aplenty, like kangaroos, echidnas and the endangered Cape Barren geese. Need advice? Visit the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre.
Penguin pageantry
Join little penguins on their nightly procession around Kingscote and Penneshaw, to cosy seaside burrows. The friendly folk of the Kangaroo Island Marine Centre in Kingscote run tours, so you don’t miss the parade.
Island indulgence
Take your taste buds on tour. Try sheep milk cheeses, pure Ligurian honey, watch cooking demonstrations and select your own live lobster! Taste boutique wines beside Cape Willoughby Lighthouse.
You can’t eat it but you might like to visit the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery to learn about traditional bush products.
Seal Bay Conservation Park
Walk among dozing Australian sea lions. You will need to book a tour or join a park ranger for a guided walk on the beach to get a close view. Take a self-guided tour on the boardwalk and admire from afar.
See the light (house)
Envelope yourself in Kangaroo Island’s history. Tour its spectacular lighthouses. Cape Willoughby is South Australia's oldest lighthouse. At Cape Borda, tour the lighthouse, museum and old landing site. At Cape du Couedic, wander among the remains of the jetty and storerooms. All three have on-site accommodation where you can stay.
